Merriam's Turkey Information

The Merriam turkey is highly sought-after by many hardcore turkey hunters and bagging a Merriam is a necessity of the Wild Turkey Grand Slam. All turkeys are amazing and beautiful to look at, but the Merriam, with it's white-tipped tail and back feathers, make it a favorite to many. My family's ranch is home to hundreds of these birds so I know them well. They are very fun to hunt and, in my opinion, the best turkeys to hunt with a bow. They call well, are very vocal, and they are not as skiddish as the other sub-species. Trust me, no matter your skill level, you would enjoy a Merriam's turkey hunt.

Some Quick Facts...

• Found in the western half of the U.S.
• Has white-tipped tail feathers and white back feathers
• Located primarily in South Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Washington, and California. Texas, North Dakota, and Nevada also have a few.
• Estimated population of 350,00 or so, but I think that is a little low. Like I said above, my place has about a thousand Merriam's alone.
